Food is one of the few products that no matter where or who you are, it impacts your life. There are 7 billion sets of taste buds on the planet but there are a few common trends. So where is the Food and Beverage industry headed in 2019? Here are some predictions.
Food Driven Technology
As with any industry, tech is becoming a huge factor in Food and Beverage. Most of these developments revolve around consumer knowledge. Now, more than ever, consumers want to know what goes into their food and how it’s made. This includes a desire for more local, precision agriculture, and food waste tracking. There have also been experiments with incorporating food products, like sugars, in 3D printing to make candies.
Expect Unexpected
Veggie substitutes for carbs are already taking over the food landscape – from cauliflower to squash – this trend isn’t exactly new but it will certainly continue to grow. We are seeing brands move into more exotic and different veggies in more unique ways. Take Ube, or purple yam ice cream, for example. This very traditional Filipino dessert is growing in popularity since it fits into Keto and Paleo diets. Don’t believe us? Our team visited Fest Portland this year and noted the heavy emphasis on contemporary culinary trends, which included an awesome sample of Sweet and Spicy Cauliflower (it was delicious!).

Sustainability
Sustainability is often a motivator for many of the latest innovations in Food and Beverage. Consumers are more often reflecting their societal values in their purchases by focusing on diets and companies that are ecologically beneficial to the planet. Ethical sourcing and reducing food waste ensure that people can feel good about their food and how it got to them.
